River Almonte Viaduct

The viaduct over the River Almonte is the most iconic structure on the Hinojal–Cáceres section of the Autovía de la Plata A-66. Measuring over 430 metres in length, the structure consists of two twin reinforced concrete arches, each with a span of 184 metres, situated more than 50 metres above the river’s mean water level. Its design and construction made it one of the most outstanding examples of Spanish civil engineering of its time

The construction of the viaduct required advanced technical solutions due to the geometry of the arches, the complexity of the supports and the logistical difficulties arising from the site’s location. The arches were constructed using a cantilever method, employing prefabricated segments built on the ground which were subsequently filled with concrete and assembled in their final position. This procedure made it possible to optimise work at height and improve quality control of the structural elements.

ERSIGROUP It contributed to the rationalisation and prefabrication of the reinforcement, as well as to the implementation of mechanical connection solutions that facilitated the assembly of elements with highly complex geometries. The use of industrialised systems made it possible to reduce construction times, improve safety on site and increase construction efficiency, contributing to the success of an infrastructure project regarded as a benchmark in the construction of large reinforced concrete viaducts
