Palacio de Hielo Shopping Centre
The Madrid Ice Palace, located in the Campo de las Naciones district of Madrid, was conceived as a large multifunctional complex combining commercial, sports and leisure facilities. The development comprises approximately 48,800 m² of built area, including four basement levels dedicated to parking facilities and several above-ground floors housing a 3,000 m² indoor ice rink, cinemas, retail areas, restaurants and recreational spaces. The scale of the excavation and the functional complexity of the building required structural and construction solutions specifically adapted to the execution of large reinforced concrete structures
From the perspective of fabricated reinforcing steel, the project was distinguished by the implementation of industrialized reinforcement fabrication and installation systems developed by ERSIGROUP. The main structure was supported by a 28 cm thick reinforced concrete raft foundation, reinforced using specially manufactured welded mesh panels incorporating Ø10 mm and Ø12 mm reinforcing bars, supplemented by localized reinforcement in areas subjected to higher structural loads
The construction of the four basement levels required a deep excavation reaching approximately –13.08 m below ground level, making it necessary to install an anchored perimeter diaphragm wall system to retain the surrounding soil and protect adjacent infrastructure. The presence of groundwater during excavation also required the implementation of dedicated drainage solutions and waterproofing systems, ensuring the long-term durability and performance of the reinforced concrete structure
One of the most significant aspects of the project was the use of prefabricated reinforcement cages for columns, manufactured in industrial facilities and delivered to site ready for installation. This approach eliminated the need for on-site rebar fabrication yards, optimized construction logistics and enabled sustained production rates of up to 700 m² of slab construction per day, including column installation. The industrialization of reinforcement processes implemented by ERSIGROUP contributed significantly to improved quality control, shorter construction schedules, enhanced site safety and greater overall construction efficiency
