Panama Subway Line 1
Panama Metro Line 1 is the first urban railway system built in Central America and one of the most significant public transportation infrastructure projects ever developed in the region. Conceived to transform mobility across Panama City, the line was designed to absorb a substantial share of daily road traffic entering the capital, significantly increasing public transport capacity while reducing travel times and improving the sustainability of the metropolitan transport network. Commissioned in 2014, the project became the backbone of the subsequent expansion of the Panama Metro system
The infrastructure comprises an approximately 15.8 km railway line, including 14 stations, with a significant portion constructed on elevated reinforced concrete viaducts, complemented by underground sections incorporating tunnels and underground stations. The system was designed to accommodate a passenger demand exceeding 15,000 passengers per hour per direction, providing a high-capacity transport solution for the rapidly growing metropolitan area
From a structural engineering perspective, the project involved the construction of elevated viaducts, stations, deep foundations, bored piles, bridge piers, precast pier caps, girders, precast segmental elements and a wide range of reinforced concrete ancillary structures. The repetitive nature of these structural components enabled the implementation of advanced industrialized fabrication and prefabrication processes, optimizing productivity, reducing construction time and ensuring the highest quality standards across multiple simultaneous construction fronts
From the perspective of fabricated reinforcing steel, the project represented one of ERSIGROUP‘s largest international contracts, requiring the industrialized fabrication and continuous supply of reinforcement for bored piles, bridge piers, precast pier caps, precast segments, stations, girders and ancillary structures. Reinforcement optimization, extensive prefabrication and advanced logistics planning enabled significant improvements in both manufacturing efficiency and on-site installation, while ensuring full material traceability throughout the execution of the project.
ERSIGROUP participated in the fabrication, installation and prefabrication of approximately 124,000 tonnes of reinforcing steel, including industrial cutting and bending operations, together with the prefabrication of reinforcement cages for bored piles, bridge piers, precast segments and pier caps. Through the integration of detailed engineering, industrial manufacturing and specialized logistics, ERSIGROUP ensured a continuous supply of reinforcement to multiple construction fronts, making a decisive contribution to the successful delivery of the first metro system ever constructed in Central America
The combination of detailed engineering, industrialized reinforcement fabrication, structural prefabrication and highly specialized logistics consolidated ERSIGROUP‘s participation in one of Latin America’s most important urban railway infrastructure projects, demonstrating the company’s capability to deliver comprehensive fabricated reinforcing steel solutions for large-scale transportation infrastructur
